USA: There is no standardized way to indicate expiry dates on food products in the US. In fact, all dates and codes are voluntarily added by the manufacturers.
1. Codes may sometimes consist only of numbers, usually written in the following order: MMDDYY or YYMMDD (for example, September 12, 2023, would be written as 091223 or 230912).
2. Check the code to see if the numbers represent the month. If the code consists only of numbers, 1 to 9 represent the months January through September. The letter O stands for October, N for November, and D for December.
3. Look at the code to determine if the manufacturer uses letters for the months. If the code contains letters, A represents January, and each subsequent letter represents the next month, with L representing December.
4. Examine the number to determine if the manufacturer uses the Julian calendar, indicated by a number representing the days since the first day of that year. If a manufacturer uses a Julian date, the code 0195 means the 195th day of the year 2000, which is July 14.
UK and Europe: Dates are typically written as day, month, year (DMY) or year, month, day (YMD).
Japan: Dates are often written in the order: year, month, day (YMD).
It can be challenging to use foreign recipes in cooking, as you may need to adjust the recipe to suit local measurement systems. Find answers to your questions in our handy conversion and measurement guide.
